# Themes

Finch's color scheme comes in two flavors: **built-in themes** and **custom themes**.

- **Built-in themes**: light, dark, and system — three fixed palettes, switchable any time in settings.
- **Custom themes**: a one-of-a-kind palette designed by Finch itself. Just describe the vibe you want in a sentence (e.g. "Morandi tones," "cyberpunk," "warm like a coffee shop"), and Finch designs a palette and applies it for you.

No color tweaking, no design skills required — just say what you want.

## Three ways to set it

### 1\. Switch a built-in theme in settings

Open **Finch Settings → Appearance**. The "Theme" row lets you click between light / dark / system, applied instantly.

### 2\. Just ask Finch to design one

Describe the style you want in the chat box — click any of these to try it directly:

- \[Design a Morandi-style light theme for me\](finch://chat?message=Design a Morandi-style light theme for me)
- \[Switch to a dark cyberpunk theme\](finch://chat?message=Switch to a dark cyberpunk theme)
- \[Give me a fresh, natural spring-morning light theme\](finch://chat?message=Give me a fresh, natural spring-morning light theme)
- \[Design a warm-white, soothing theme\](finch://chat?message=Design a warm-white, soothing theme)
- \[Switch me to an eye-friendly dark theme\](finch://chat?message=Switch me to an eye-friendly dark theme)

Finch applies the design right away — if you don't love it, just say "try another one," "make it darker," or "use blue as the accent color" and it'll adjust. You can always switch back to the built-in light / dark / system themes too.

### 3\. The "AI Custom Theme" entry in settings

The **Finch Settings → Appearance** page has an "AI Custom Theme" card. Click the palette icon next to it, and Finch opens a new conversation and sends the design request for you — same result as method 2, just without typing it yourself.

## Tips

- Once a custom theme is applied, settings shows its name and a color-swatch preview, so you can review it or restore the default with one click.
- Want "a new palette every day"? Pair this with [automation](./automation.md) and have Finch switch themes every morning automatically — try: \[Set up a daily task to change my theme every morning at 8am\](finch://chat?message=Set up a daily task to change my theme every morning at 8am).
